The Abbey, andstraight line on a spur jutting into the ditch Renaro confluence downstream Umbra, was founded in the second half of the eleventh century, reusing an existing residence-fortress belonging to the Monaldi. The first community of monks, hermits, led by Meinhard, Perhaps a hermit of Syria from the monastery on Mount Catria, settled at first in the nearby Santa Maria del Vecchio (known to Foligno with Ian denomination chapel of Blessed Alan), Then in the ancient fortress of counts of Monaldi that will be called Holy Cross Sassovivo. After crossing the upper courtyard, you enter the church, restored after the earthquake 1832, through works that were completed in 1856. From the atrium before the church, A small door leads to the cloister Romanesque, built between 1229 and 1232 by Peter the Roman marble worker Mary. A rectangular or entirely in white marble, The monastery consists of a double row of 128 columns combined, partly smooth and partly spiral, which support 58 arches and a classical entablature with colored marble mosaics and two lists of decorated. Inside the monastery, which is accessed from the cloister, you can admire frescoes, among which, in the refectory, a Last Supper, by a culture of late Mannerist painter of the late sixteenth, a San Michele Arcangelo, above the entrance of the refectory same, and a Virgin and Child, above the entrance of Abbot (would seem that the last two works are attributed to Thomas Nasini, Sienese artist, author of the altar - probably 1744 - For the abbey church, depicting The announcement of the Passion).
Through the dormitories turned, the thirteenth century, it descends to lodge called the Paradise, presenting fragments of frescoes from the early fifteenth century monochrome, attributed to John of Corraduccio.
Continuing, it will be able to reach a second loggia, built in 1442, through the reuse of structures located in the medieval protection of a crypt of the eleventh century, the aforementioned chapel of Blessed Alan.
A few years, also, was rediscovered an ancient crypt obtained from local, were discovered during restoration work following the earthquake 1997. Persons with disabilities who arrive by car can park in the square opposite the church. The path leading to the entrance of the monument is clay and gravel. The main entrance to the abbey, where is situated the church and the cloister, has 4 steps; can also be accessed via a ramp, which has a step at the beginning, cm high with 19, Lunga m 10 with slope of about 9%.
